Domain Names:
A domain name is similar to a mobile phone number in that it is one of a kind and has no fixed geographical location. It is simply registered to an individual/business and is normally set-up to direct traffic to a web site and/or work as part of an email address.
Many people automatically think that a domain name should be their business name. This is a good idea since your present customers will automatically assume this. However, many people approach the Internet with the aim of obtaining new customers, in which case it is worth considering other options. These could include the nature of the business/site.

For example, if we have a florists in Bristol called Flora's Flower Shop we should consider the obvious - "
florasflowershop.co.uk". However, a more successful option maybe "bristolflorists.co.uk". The reason behind this is simply that people are more likely to search for "Bristol florists" than "Flora's flower shop".

Please note that domain names can consist of up to 63 alphanumeric characters and the hyphen (the hyphen can't be the first or last character of the domain).

.com, .co.uk, .net?
This depends on the market you are after. If it is only the UK, go for co.uk or one of the other UK domain name extensions. If you want a more international presence try .com, .net, etc.

When buying a domain name you should not simply go for the cheapest, consider what you want to use it for (just email or a web site) and look at what you are getting. Many cheap domain name companies charge fees to move the domain to a different hosting company, which can make it considerably more expensive.
