How do I manually configure Windows 95 for dialup?

This document will instruct you on how to connect your Windows 95 machine to Team Partners Internet, and will show the correct settings for you to verify if you are having connection problems.

The advised Minimum System requirements needed to maintain a connection to the Team Partners Internet service are a 486 DX2 –33, 16megabytes of RAM, 10megabytes of Hard Disk drive space. To locate your specific system specifications click on your Start button, click on settings, click on Control Panel, double click on System icon.

Configuring Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking

This is a setup and general help guide for connecting to Team Partners Internet via Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking (DUN). To follow these setup instructions you must have an existing Team Partners Internet login.

You must have a Windows 95 CD or Cab files installed on your computers hard disk drive before you continue if in any doubt please call your vendor.

If Dial-Up Networking is already installed please refer to number 5.

If you wish to install a new Dial-Up Networking connection please refer to number 15.

1. Double-click My Computer:

and then Add/Remove Programs.

2. Select the Windows Setup tab and highlight Communications.

3. Click Details and check Dial-Up Networking. If the box is already checked, then DUN is already installed on your computer.

4. Click OK, and then OK again. If prompted to reboot, click No.

5. Go to the Control Panel, Double click Network.

6. Verify that Client for Microsoft Networks is installed. If it is not installed, click Add, highlight Client, and click Add again.

Select Microsoft from the Manufacturers list and select Client for Microsoft Networks from the Network Clients list. Then, click OK.

7. Verify that Dial-Up Adapter is installed. If it is not installed, click Add, highlight Adapter, and click Add again.

Select Microsoft from the Manufacturers list and select Dial-Up Adapter from the Network Adapters list. Then, click OK.

8. Verify that TCP/IP is installed. If it is not installed, click Add, highlight Protocol, and click Add again.

Select Microsoft from the Manufacturers list and select TCP/IP from the Network Protocols list. Then, click OK.

9. At this point, you should have three Network components installed: Client for Microsoft Networks, Dial-Up Adapter, and TCP/IP. If you have additional Network components installed, you might have connection problems. If you are not connecting to a LAN, you may want to remove these additional Network components. If you are not connecting via a Local Area Network or LAN then your Components screen should read as below.

10. Highlight Dial-Up Adapter, and then click Properties. Select the Bindings tab. Verify that only TCP/IP is checked, and then click OK.

11. Highlight TCP/IP, and then click Properties. Verify that the following information is correct for each tab:

  • IP Address: Obtain an IP Address Automatically is selected
  • WINS Configuration: Disable WINS Resolution is selected
  • Gateway: leave as is
  • Bindings: Client for Microsoft Networks checked
  • Advanced: leave as is
  • DNS Configuration: Disable DNS is selected. Enable DNS and in the Domain box you must insert your unique user name, please use example below for other additional settings.

12.Click OK to close the TCP/IP settings window.

13.Verify that Client for Microsoft Networks is selected in the Primary Network Logon drop-down list. Then, click OK (you may be required to add a Computer and Workgroup Name in the Identification tab).

14. When prompted to reboot, click Yes.

To create a brand new connection please follow instructions below.

15. Double-click My Computer, and then Dial-up Networking.

16. Double-click Make New Connection.

Enter Internet Connection for the name.

17. Click Next and enter the dial-up access number (08450551877).

18. Click Next, and then Finish.

19. Right-click the Internet Connection icon and choose Properties.

20. Click twice on the new icon just made and click on Dial Properties:

Ensure that if you have call waiting that the correct deactivate code is entered ie #72 or *2 and that the relevant box is ticked. If you do not have call waiting ensure that no such settings are inserted and that the tick is also removed.

Click on OK.

21. If you wish to create a desktop Icon then Right Hand mouse click once on the new connection icon, click on Create Shortcut and ok. Modem Related Issues. (Modulator de-modulator)

22. Click on your Windows 95 Start button, click on Settings, Click on Control Panel:

Double click on the modem icon.

23. Ideally you should have one modem installed. If you have multiple modems then this in itself may be causing connection difficulties.

To remove additional modems by clicking on the modem in question once and click on the remove button.

Caution If you are unsure of your modem refer to your Vendor. To add a standard modem click on the add button.

24. Select 'Other' unless you have PCMCIA modem ie Laptop modem and click on next.

25. Select 'Don’t detect my modem; I will select it from a list' and click on next.

If you wish Windows 95 to install your modem do not click in box 'Don't detect my modem I will select it from a list', Windows will then attempt to Auto Detect your modem.

26. Ensure you select the correct settings as above and click on Next.

27. Click once on the port your modem is located on.

Caution: this may differ; and click on Next.

28. If your new modem has setup correctly you will be displayed the above message, read the message and click on finish, you must restart your PC at this point then follow number 29 to ensure all settings are correct.

29. After restarting your modem you must go to your control panel and double click on your modem icon once again.

30. The above 'screen shot' will show new standard modem installed, click on properties.

31. To select Max connection speed click on down arrow, after selecting speed click on the Connection Tab above.

32. Click on Advanced only if all of the above settings are Standard.

33. The above screen may vary depending on your modem type, If you have a modem 'Init' or 'Initialise string' or 'AT' commands then type in Capital Letters in the Extra Settings box, if not click on ok as are not essential.
