How do I manually configure Windows 2000 for dialup?

This guide is intended to show you how to connect your Windows 2000 computer to Team Partners Internet, and has been designed to be as easy to follow as possible.

The steps listed here will allow you to configure Dial-Up Networking (DUN) under Windows 2000. This will allow you to connect to Team Partners Internet without the need for any additional software.

To begin, left click on your Start button, move your mouse so that Settings is highlighted, and from the menu that scrolls out, left click on Network and Dial-up Connections (see below).

Opening DUN under Win2k

You should now see the Network and Dial-up Connections window open, looking very similar to the one shown below:

Networking & DUN window

With this window open, you now need to double click your left mouse button on the icon labelled Make New Connection (see icon highlighted above) to begin creating your new Team Partners Internet connection.

Notice the Network Connection Wizard will now start (see screenshot below):

Network Connection Wizard start

The window shown above is purely for information purposes. To begin the real process of creating your new connection, click on the Next button (highlighted in the above screenshot).

The window shown below should now open:

Select the type of connection you wish to create

Here you must choose which type of network connection you wish to create. You want to connect to the Internet using your telephone line and modem, so ensure that you have placed the little black dot in the second option from the top (Dial-up to the Internet) to highlight it (see above), and then click Next to continue.

After selecting the type of connection you want to create in the previous step, and clicking Next, the Internet Connection Wizard will now start.

Internet Connection Wizard

Here, you are being asked how you would like to create your connection to the Internet. You should choose the last option on the list, I want to set up my internet connection manually... (highlighted in the above screenshot), and click on Next to continue.

You should now see the screen below:

Choose your connection type...

You are now being asked how your computer will connect to the Internet. You will be connecting via a modem and a phone line, so you should highlight the first option, I connect through a phone line and a modem (see above), and then click Next.

The next screen you will see is shown below:

Entering the number for your local POP

On this screen you are being asked for the phone number of your Internet service provider (Team Partners Internet - 08450551877), so that your computer knows which number to dial in order to connect you to the Internet.

You now need to specify some more settings, so left click on the button marked Advanced.

You should now be looking at the screen shown below:

Advanced Connection Properties

This screen is not the one you are interested in. Notice the tab at the top of the window labelled Addresses (highlighted above). Left click this tab to access the settings you want to change (shown below):

Enter DNS servers

There are two settings you should check on this screen.

The first is in the section IP address - Ensure this is set to Internet service provider automatically provides one (this is the default setting).

The second section is DNS server addresses. - Ensure this is set to My ISP automatically provides a Domain Name Server (DNS) address (this is the default setting).

When you have finished making your changes, your screen should look the same as the screenshot shown above (all the areas you need to check/change have been highlighted in red).

Finally, click on the OK button to return to the previous screen, and then Next to continue.

You should now be looking at the screen shown below:

Enter your Username and Password

Here, you are being asked for the Username and Password you will use to access Team Partners Internet. These will have been supplied to you in the welcome email you received shortly after subscribing to the service.

Enter your Username and Password into the boxes provided. Be very careful in your typing, as these are case sensitive (I.e. cheese is seen as different to CHEESE). Once you are certain you have typed these in correctly, click on the Next button to continue.

You should now see the screen shown below:

Choose a name for your connection

On this screen you need to choose a name for your connection. We suggest using the name Team Partners Internet. Click Next to continue.

You should now see the screen shown below:

Set up a mail account?

On this screen, you are being asked if you would like to configure Outlook Express to use as your E-mail program. Whether you do this now is up to you. Instructions on configuring Outlook Express can be found here. If you decide to do this now, select Yes and click Next (in this case, you will arrive at the final screen AFTER you have completed configuring Outlook Express).

If you select not to configure your E-mail program now, highlight No, and then click Next.

You will be greeted by the final screen, shown below:

Finished

Congratulations!

You have finished creating your connection to Team Partners Internet. To save the connection you have just created, click the Finish button. You can elect not to connect to the internet right away by removing the tick from the box labelled To connect to the Internet immediately... (highlighted in the above screenshot), if you so desire.

If not, your computer will attempt to dial Team Partners Internet and launch Internet Explorer after you click the Finish button. Happy browsing!
